Who Should Be The Guardian Of AI?

In our latest podcast episode, we explore the complex and fast-moving world of AI governance. While artificial intelligence dominates headlines and boardroom discussions, it’s important to recognise that AI is not the only pressing issue organisations face. Drawing lessons from past technology cycles, we discuss how hype often overshadows practical solutions, and why a balanced perspective is crucial.

We highlight the importance of going beyond narrow data protection frameworks when regulating AI. Transparency, trust, and accountability in AI development require broader, multi-stakeholder governance - extending far beyond the desks of data protection officers. Data ethics, after all, is much bigger than personal privacy; it touches on fairness, accessibility, and societal impact.

The conversation also emphasises the need for democratizing AI governance, ensuring that decision-making includes diverse voices and perspectives. While training DPOs on AI is essential, merging roles risks diluting both responsibilities. Most importantly, we argue that the current focus on AI should not distract from ongoing compliance issues and everyday challenges that remain critical for organisations.

By grounding the AI debate in history, ethics, and governance, this episode encourages listeners to move beyond the hype and engage with the deeper questions of responsibility, fairness, and trust in technology.
